Friends,
Today is my daughter Lydia's 7th birthday. She’s a little miffed that daddy is not home for that, but I plan to make up for it with gifts and cake when I get back. I admit I still feel a little guilty not making it home in time, but there’s another way to think about this.
The world Lydia is growing up in is far less friendly to the faith I’m passing on to her, and it certainly does not offer much help in learning what it means to be a woman. So if what we at the Ciceronian Society are doing contributes just a little to redeeming that civilization and resisting its decline, then this is time well spent. I hope and pray that both my
children grow up in a world where they can learn from and be guided by people like you in their churches, schools, and communities.
Interestingly, today would have also been my maternal grandfather’s 81st birthday. He passed away in 2020. He was not educated, and he was a simple man who never met a stranger
and was overwhelmed by God’s grace and love. His faith was absurd at times, in the best sense, where he would fearlessly follow the call of God wherever it led him; often sharing the Gospel with individuals in my hometown that everyone else gave up on. When he died, weeks before the pandemic, his funeral was attended by over 300 people testifying to his simple love and the joy he brought to those around him. He would have hated coming to this conference, but if you heard his stories and prayed
with him, you would not have been the same afterward.
I don’t know exactly what the future of the Ciceronian Society looks like. That’s in God’s hands. But I hope and pray it is a place that helps Christian intellectuals love and serve the churches that people like my children and my grandfather have called
home.
Thank you for joining us this weekend in Plano. And please consider lifting us up in prayer according to your traditions that we may grow and change in ways that are pleasing to God and in faithfulness to his call on us as an organization. If you desire to contribute financially to this vision, we invite you to do so.
I also want to send one last thank you to our sponsors who are already
doing their own work in service to this vision. We are grateful for your support and your commitment to a better civilization.
Finally, if you have not done so, please sign up for our regular newsletter to stay updated on new events, publications, and podcasts from the Ciceronian Society. And please complete the conference
survey to help us improve future events.
See you again soon.
In Christ,
Josh Bowman
